Thanks! Merci!

Greetings, (Français en dessous)

Montreal’s public space is presently under attack by commercial media companies – Pattison, CBS Outdoor and Astral Media. Here and in many cities around the world, these companies are using our streets for commercial purposes (by legal and illegal means), while neglecting to think about the communities that they affect. It is time to put an end to this and collectively design our streets and spaces to be as participatory, cultural, artistic and stimulating as our communities are.

ARTUNG! is now accepting art submissions (locally and globally) for their gigantic, public art collage to help fight this commercialization injustice! Drop an email to montrealespace@gmail.com if you’re interested in submitting a piece or if you just want some more information about what they’re up to.

Our streets should be a community canvass, not a corporate one.

Salut!

Unravelling the G20: War Time Powers and Illegal Searches

Cara Chellew

Did someone really give police orders to illegally search hundreds of people in a public park?

New Year’s Day 2011: Toronto slept and nursed a city wide hangover. Iron gates were pulled over shop windows and the occasional car floated down forgotten streets. It felt like the calm before the storm and eerily similar to a weekend last June, when downtown Toronto was told to pack up, lock down, and shut up. I still shudder when I see a boy in blue…
